Apicoectomy Procedures
Root canals are generally all that is needed in order to save teeth that have become infected or had trauma to them. On occasion, a root canal alone cannot save the tooth and surgery may be recommended.
Why would I need Endodontic Surgery?
Surgery can also be used to diagnose fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but still cause pain in the tooth. Damaged root surfaces and surrounding bone can also be treated through endodontic surgery.
What is involved in an Apicoectomy?
An incision is made in the gum to expose the bone and surrounding tissue. The infected tissue is removed along with the end of the root tip. A filling is placed at the end of the root to seal the end of the root. Endodontic Surgery to remove infected tissueThe gum tissue is then sutured back into place. The bone will heal around the root over a period of months.
Following the surgery, you may experience some discomfort or swelling while the incision heals. This is normal for any surgical procedure. You will be given postoperative instructions to follow after your surgery. Patients are asked to relax the remainder of the day following the surgery. Most patients do return to work or regular daily activities the following day.
